Top 10 best beaches in Phuket you won't believe exist

Helmed as being one of the largest islands in Thailand, Phuket has a reputation of having some of the best beaches in the world. It makes for a delightful vacation spot in the Andaman region, and a favorite amongst global tourists. As a Thai who has been to Phuket several times, I have to agree that each beach has its own aura to it, while combining a tropical escape with cultural richness and a hint of modernity. You'll have plenty of options to choose from based on our guide below!

    Top 10 Beaches in Phuket

    1. Patong Beach

One of the busiest and liveliest places on the island is Patong Beach, which is only 15 kilometers west of Phuket Town. It's ideal for both excitement and relaxation:

    • Beaches & Activities: Swimming and sunbathing are perfect on the lengthy stretch of white sand and crystal-clear turquoise waters.
    • Nightlife: With bars, nightclubs, and beach clubs like Illuzion, Sugar, Kudo, and Fuga, Patong comes alive at night, particularly on Bangla Road.
    • Where to Stay: There are many places to stay, including upscale resorts like the Holiday Inn.
    • Vibe: Patong is energetic and lively, but not the best choice for families seeking quiet.

With fewer nightlife options, Kata Beach is a well-liked but more relaxed, family-friendly substitute for Patong. The 1.5-kilometer beach offers leisure in a lovely tropical setting and is divided into Kata Yai (Big Kata) and Kata Noi (Small Kata).

    • Accommodations: The family-friendly Kata Palm Resort & Spa and the boutique The Shore Katathani are available.
    • Activities: From May to October, Kata is a popular destination for water sports, especially surfing.

Families or those seeking a more sedate beach experience will love this location.

    • Accommodations include both affordable choices like the Karon Princess Hotel and upscale resorts like the Mövenpick Resort & Spa.
    • Karon has a calm atmosphere that is perfect for leisurely walks because it lacks bars and nightclubs.
    • Activities: Swimming, relaxing on beach chairs, and enjoying cold coconut water are all excellent options.

How to Get around Phuket beaches

    1. Phuket Smart Bus:

This is perhaps the most convenient option, covering several popular beaches and areas of Phuket. It stops at major beaches like Surin, Karon, Kata, and Kamala, and connects to the airport and Central Festival mall.

It's super affordable. I enjoyed using it from Patong to Surin because it's air-conditioned and equipped with Wi-Fi. Buses run every 30 minutes from early morning till late evening.

To pay, get a stored-value card from any convenience store, which you can top up during your stay.

    1. Songthaew:

For short distances, like going to Kamala beach from Patong, I recommend using Songthaew to get a feel of local life. These are traditional Thai transport, resembling converted pickup trucks with a roof and benches at the back.

    It's a convenient and budget-friendly option also.

           3. Grab or Bolt:

For safety and security, ride-sharing apps Grab and Bolt are available throughout the island. Bolt is more local and offers cheaper rates, while Grab is more widely used. Be aware that prices may increase during peak hours due to higher demand.

These apps also offer a cashless option, as you can link your credit/debit cards to the application for easy payment.

    • Shoulder Season (March to May): Temperatures rise, reaching up to 38°C in April. It’s a great time for sunbathing and surfing with fewer crowds, though the sun can make the beach feel hotter.
