15 Must-Buy Cambodian Souvenirs: Treasures of Khmer

Cambodia is a country rich in culture and craftsmanship. If you're planning a trip to this beautiful country, you'll definitely want to bring back some of that cultural richness with you. Whether for yourself or for friends, Cambodian souvenirs always bring joy. If you're wondering what to bring back from Cambodia on your next trip, here are some gift ideas that might interest you.

    1. Krama, the Cambodian Scarf

The Krama, a traditional and iconic checked scarf, is a must-have souvenir for anyone visiting Cambodia. Worn by men, women, and children of all social classes, the Krama transcends social status and is a cherished item across the country. This cultural gem is also a staple amongst the Khmer communities in neighboring Thailand and Vietnam.

The traditional Cambodian Krama scarf is a cultural staple, easily recognized by its iconic checkered pattern in vibrant color combinations like red and white, blue and white, or classic black and white. Crafted from soft cotton or luxurious silk, this versatile accessory is both practical and stylish.

It offers protection from the elements – perfect for wrapping around your head on sunny days or draping over your shoulders or waist for a touch of Cambodian charm. Lightweight, packable, and budget-friendly (just $3 -$5), the Krama makes an ideal souvenir.

    2. Sampot, the Traditional Cambodian Outfit

Every country has its own traditional dress style, and the Kingdom of Cambodia is no exception with the Sampot. Don't forget to discover the elegance of Cambodia's national garment. This rectangular piece of fabric, approximately 3 meters long and 1 meter wide, is expertly wrapped around the waist and secured with a metal belt. Unlike a skirt, its unique draping resembles trousers. Cambodian artisans weave the Sampot from luxurious silk, creating intricate and beautiful designs that embody the country's rich textile heritage.

    3. Antiques

The sale and export of registered Cambodian antique pieces are strictly forbidden. Unfortunately, this hasn’t prevented thousands of priceless artifacts from Angkor being stolen over the years – and sold overseas. Because of this and several protective laws, you're unlikely to come across any genuine antiques that are openly on sale in Cambodia. However, items bearing intricate stylings and exotic forms, even knock-off or antique-like ones, can make great keepsakes of your memorable visit to Cambodia.

    4. Wood Sculptures

Imagine holding a piece of Cambodian history in your hands! The country's woodcarving tradition stretches back centuries, and you can see Cambodian artisans possess remarkable expertise and refined carving techniques, which are particularly evident in the intricate sculptures and bas-reliefs of the walls of Angkor Wat and other ancient temples throughout the country. Now, you can find beautiful carvings perfect for taking home – think miniature gods, Buddhas, elegant dancers, or even playful animals. Many of these pieces are made from ebony or teak, woods known for their rich colors and detailed patterns.

    5. Cambodian Silk Fabrics

Weaving is an ancient craft dating back to the 13th century in Cambodia and is still preserved today. The traditional method of weaving ikat silk and the use of natural dyes represent the essence of this craft in Cambodia.
The term "ikat" refers to a textile design process in which threads are dyed before being woven together to create complex and elaborate patterns. In the famous temple complex of Angkor Wat, you can admire a series of patterns on the temple walls representing traditional Khmer ikat patterned clothing.

Handcrafted ikat silk with care is unique because of the use of materials sourced from the Cambodian landscape. For example, traditional Khmer ikat uses golden silk spun from the fibers of the golden silkworm, as well as natural dye pigments extracted from indigenous species.

Silk fabrics produced using this method are of high quality: they are soft, washable, and do not easily fade. Although handmade woven products are more expensive, they are unique and have great value.

    6. Cambodian Silver Jewelry

As early as the 11th century, Cambodians excelled in goldsmithing, a tradition that continues with the country's silver jewelry. These jewelry pieces, adorned with local gemstones, feature unique Khmer motifs, reflecting Cambodian culture.
During your visit to Phnom Penh or Siem Reap, you will easily find silver jewelry, perfect for gifts or for yourself. Siem Reap's night market is the perfect place to buy them, but be sure to distinguish authentic products from counterfeits by favoring certified large stores. Hi Michelle, thanks for your question! Here are some tips to ensure you're getting genuine silver:

    • Check for Hallmarks: Genuine silver items usually have a hallmark indicating the silver content. In many countries, silver is marked with "925" or "Sterling" to denote that it is 92.5% pure silver.
    • Consider the Weight: Silver is denser than many other metals, so a genuine silver piece will typically feel heavier than similar-sized items made of other materials.

    • Purchase from Reputable Sellers: Buy from well-known or trusted stores or vendors who have a reputation for selling genuine silver.

Unfortunately, there’s no foolproof method to guarantee authenticity due to various tricks used in the market. You might want to check out Central Market for some reliable options!

Hey! Great to hear you're enjoying Cambodia.

For unique souvenirs to bring back to Canada, I’d recommend considering Cambodian paintings and handmade organic skincare products.

Cambodian paintings often feature traditional designs that can be a beautiful and unique reminder of your time there. Handmade organic skincare products are also a fantastic choice, as they offer a touch of local craftsmanship and natural ingredients, they also worked well on skin too (I've tried it)! wink

Hi, I want to bring some gifts to my friends in France and I will look around in markets but I was wondering what I should bring them from here to try, they already eat/try some khmer dishes my mom make when they come to my house like prahok/deserts and all so I'm more looking for snacks/candies or food which can last such as pork/chicken floss. Also if you had any ideas of places where I can shop around for other little gifts than food I'd gladly like some recommendations. Thanks!

Yes, Siem Reap has several night markets where you can enjoy a variety of street food. One notable spot is near Psar Chas, also known as the Old Market, located alongside the river. This area offers a diverse selection of food stalls.

Some vendors offer a wide range of dishes, while others specialize in specific items like roti, shakes, or even wood-fired pizza. The prices are generally affordable, and the market is popular among both locals and tourists, providing an authentic taste of local cuisine.

Hello, My husband and I are planning a trip to Southeast Asia for either 2025 or 2026. We're hoping to visit Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos. From my research, it seems like November to February is the best time to visit. We want to avoid heat and humidity and prefer not to travel in November and December so we can be home for Thanksgiving and Christmas with our family. This leaves us with January or February for our trip. Would January be more crowded due to New Year festivities? Also, I remember reading about farmers burning fields, creating lots of smoke during certain months, but I can't recall the details. Thanks!

Hi Jasmin! Thanks for your question!

Just a heads up, Lunar New Year is on January 29th in 2025, so it might get a bit busy around that time. Thailand and Cambodia can still be pretty humid, even during the cooler months.

Traveling to four countries in a month might feel a bit rushed. Adding an extra week is a great idea! But remember, hopping between countries can take up a lot of time. If you like a more relaxed pace, maybe think about focusing on three countries or let an agency help you so you can organize everything perfectly. This way, you can really enjoy each place without feeling too rushed.

Oh, and about the farmers burning fields – that usually happens from February to April, especially in Northern Thailand and Laos, creating a lot of smoke and haze. So, January might be a better time for clearer skies.

You can read our articles about Thailand in January and Vietnam in January for more information.

    Happy planning!

And lastly, can you suggest things to do/see/go in either country? Thanks from a 60-year-old nervous but excited traveler.
