2.2 How to Get to Phu Quoc from Ho Chi Minh by Sea

Phu Quoc is an ideal spot for sea adventurers who want to spend their holidays there. It means that visitors to the place must combine both bus and ferry transport from Ho Chi Minh City or any place in Mekong Delta as there is no direct road link. This option has a lower cost but takes longer than the air route while offering a different kind of experience. There are two routes available; Rach Gia - Phu Quoc and Ha Tien - Phu Quoc.

    • Rach Gia - Phu Quoc

The trip from Ho Chi Minh City to Rach Gia is 270 km and takes about 6 to 7 hours. But if you depart from Can Tho, it will just take 2-3 hours to get here. Buses are the main means; prices differ and range from 110,000 VND ($4) to 150,000 VND ($6) per one-way ticket, based on where you are departing.

To avoid wasting time, it's better to catch a night bus. Check beforehand on the transfer buses that bring you to the Rach Gia port. From there, you take a speedboat or ferry to Phu Quoc Island. There are many boat companies available on this route.

    • Ha Tien - Phu Quoc

It’s an 8-hour journey by bus from Ho Chi Minh City to Ha Tien, making it longer than other routes. Meanwhile, if you depart from Chau Doc, it only takes 2 hours to arrive at Ha Tien port. Bus fares vary according to the departure point, starting from 120,000 VND ($4.77) up to 190,000 VND ($7.56).

Upon arrival at the Ha Tien Ferry Terminal, you can choose either a speedboat or a ferry to Phu Quoc.

If high-speed boat rides interest you, companies such as Superdong, Hong Tam, or Ngoc Thanh offer ticket options. Adult ticket prices range between 215,000 VND ($8.50) and 230,000 VND ($9.15), while children’s tickets range from 160,000 VND ($6.36). Travel time on Ha Tien – Phu Quoc high-speed boats is only 1 to 2 hours, compared to the longer Rach Gia – Phu Quoc route.

For those who wish to travel with their vehicles (cars or motorbikes), Thanh Thoi Terminal offers ferries. An adult pays 185,000 VND ($7.36), while a child pays 125,000 VND ($4.97).

    • Ca Mau - Phu Quoc

The fast ferry line linking Ca Mau to both Nam Du and Phu Quoc has returned to service after being suspended for almost two years since March 2023. This fast ferry fleet, known as Phu Quoc Express 5*, can carry between 300 and 600 passengers.

Built with the latest European technology, these high-speed twin-hull ferries have been constructed using modern parameters. With Rolls Royce MTU engines onboard, they can reach a maximum speed of 55 kilometers per hour. This makes the trip from Ca Mau to Phu Quoc take approximately three hours and fifteen minutes, compared to the eight to ten hours it used to take by road or traditional ferry from Ca Mau. The fast ferry departs from Tran Van Thoi Port, which is situated nearly 60 kilometers away from Ca Mau city.

Hi! For your 6D5N trip to Phu Quoc with a direct flight, Indian citizens don’t need a visa for stays up to 30 days, provided you stay on Phu Quoc and don’t visit mainland Vietnam. Apologies for any earlier mix-up about your plans! Ensure your passport is valid for 6 months and you have proof of onward travel.

For payments, forex cards and Indian credit cards are widely accepted in Phu Quoc for purchases and ATM withdrawals (in VND). However, some small vendors and markets may prefer cash, so carry some VND.

With a forex card (e.g., Niyo), you can load any amount, spend directly in VND, and only incur ATM withdrawal fees (varies by machine + ~₹218 for Niyo). Withdraw cash once and use POS payments where possible.

Have a wonderful trip to Phu Quoc!

    Hi Bharat,

You may bring cash into Vietnam, but please note that if you're carrying more than 15 million VND or USD 5,000, it must be declared at customs upon arrival. Amounts below this do not require a declaration.

For Indian passport holders, a visa is not required to visit Phu Quoc only.

    Regarding your layovers:

    • In Kuala Lumpur, your 2-hour stop does not require a visa, provided you remain in the international transit area and do not pass through immigration.

    • In Bangkok, the same applies to your 6-hour layover, no visa is needed as long as you stay within the transit zone and do not exit the airport.

Please feel free to reach out if you’d like help with the visa application process or have any other travel questions.

Hi! Getting from the north to the south of Phú Quốc is actually quite straightforward. You can take a taxi, use Grab, or try Xanh SM (the electric taxis). The drive takes around 45–60 minutes, and the cost is usually between 400,000–600,000 VND depending on the distance.

Island hopping means visiting a few of the smaller nearby islands by boat, usually as part of a day tour.

For luggage, you can ask your hotel if they offer a luggage transfer service, many are happy to help, especially if you’ve booked both hotels in advance. If not, you could arrange a taxi just to transport your bags while you travel separately or explore on the way.

Happy to help if you’d like recommendations for transport or tours!
