Along the way, I stumbled upon small markets where I stopped for a chat, enjoyed a cup of tea, and even watched a weaving demonstration. I also picked up a few local Thai products - simple, authentic, and very affordable.

Tips: Google Translate helps a lot when chatting, and if the price feels fair, try not to bargain too hard. It's a nice way to support the community.

Bring insect repellent, especially if you plan to bike at sunset.

2.3 Climbing Pu Dênh mountain

Pu Dênh, with its moderate yet challenging elevation, is a perfect destination for mountain enthusiasts. From the summit, you can take in panoramic views of the Mai Hich valley, where quaint villages peek through the green of rice fields and forested mountains.

2.4 Bamboo rafting on Xia stream

If you want a peaceful moment in Mai Hich, try bamboo rafting on the Xia Stream. The water is clear and cool, and the raft just glides along past quiet villages. Long ago, this stream was essential to village life, and today, it’s simply a beautiful way to slow down.

Best times to go there

The best time to visit Mai Hich depends on what you want to experience, as there are three distinct seasons:

1. November to February: The weather is cool, with misty mornings especially in January and February. While visibility may be reduced, this is also when flowers bloom and local festivals take place.
2. March to June: Days are bright and sunny, but the heat starts to pick up in May and June. It’s perfect for sightseeing and longer hikes, but make sure to bring a hat and sunscreen.
3. July to October: This is the rainy season, with cooler temperatures. However, the roads can get slippery, so it’s a good idea to pack waterproof gear.

If you love rice terraces, there are two seasons to consider:

• Planting season: In March, April, and July/August, the fields turn green as they’re prepared for cultivation. It’s a great time to see the rice terraces in their early growth.
• Harvest season: From late May to early June, the terraces turn golden, you'll have a chance to see stunning views. The second harvest happens in October, just before the land rests from November to January.

How many days should you spend exploring Mai Hich?

If you have 3 to 4 days, it's a great idea to continue your journey to Mai Chau, then Pu Luong Nature Reserve, which lies conveniently along the same route.
