Mai Hich: A new name in Northern Vietnam’s travel map
Tucked away in the peaceful valleys of Hoa Binh, Mai Hich is still a hidden name to many travelers. But that’s exactly what makes it special. Far from the crowds and untouched by mass tourism, this quiet Thai ethnic village offers a rare blend of natural beauty and cultural authenticity. In recent years, Mai Hich has quietly emerged as a unique destination for those seeking something different.
It may not be on every traveler’s radar yet, but give it a chance, and you might just fall in love with its slow pace.

Mai Hich is a peaceful commune in the southwest of Mai Chau district, Hoa Binh province, about 150 kilometers, or a 3-hour drive from Hanoi. Just 12 kilometers from Mai Chau town, this quiet valley is nestled among the majestic mountains of Northwest Vietnam.

Things to do in Mai Hich
2.1 Trek through rice fields
Trekking in Mai Hich is a must. Routes vary in difficulty, but many are beginner-friendly.
My experience was 3-4 hours of walking through lush rice paddies, bamboo forests, and peaceful villages like Xam Khoe, Buoc, and Cun Pheo. Along the way, you’ll see locals tending fields, raising cattle, palm-covered hills and might even be invited to join in-planting rice, feeding buffalo, or harvesting fruit.

2.2 Cycle around the village
One of the best ways to experience Mai Hich is by renting a bike and exploring its peaceful village roads. I spent about three hours cycling through Hich 1 and Cha Lang, passing by rice fields, traditional stilt houses, and smiling locals.

Along the way, I stumbled upon small markets where I stopped for a chat, enjoyed a cup of tea, and even watched a weaving demonstration. I also picked up a few local Thai products - simple, authentic, and very affordable.
Tips: Google Translate helps a lot when chatting, and if the price feels fair, try not to bargain too hard. It's a nice way to support the community.
Bring insect repellent, especially if you plan to bike at sunset.

2.3 Climbing Pu Dênh mountain
Pu Dênh, with its moderate yet challenging elevation, is a perfect destination for mountain enthusiasts. From the summit, you can take in panoramic views of the Mai Hich valley, where quaint villages peek through the green of rice fields and forested mountains.

2.4 Bamboo rafting on Xia stream
If you want a peaceful moment in Mai Hich, try bamboo rafting on the Xia Stream. The water is clear and cool, and the raft just glides along past quiet villages. Long ago, this stream was essential to village life, and today, it’s simply a beautiful way to slow down.

2.5 Watch (or join) a traditional Thai dance
Cultural festivals in Mai Hich often include traditional Thai dances-colorful, joyful performances that tell stories of nature, love, and daily life.
Dancers wear bright costumes and move to drums and folk instruments. If you’re lucky, you might be invited to dance-and afterward, share a sip of can wine, a fermented rice wine served from large jars through bamboo straws.

2.6 Try silk weaving
If you are curious about the local crafts, you should really join a silk weaving session. The White Thai people here have been weaving natural fibers into beautiful textiles for generations.

2.8 Exploring Lung, Pu Muong, and Het caves
Pu Muong Cave lies deep within the forest and is known for its narrow entrance leading to a spacious, year-round cool interior.
Lung Cave, a favorite among many visitors, is moderately deep, with a naturally cool and quiet environment. When flashlight beams reflect off the stalactites inside, they create magical, shimmering effects.
Het Cave offers the most adventurous vibe.

2.9 Taste local delicacies
Grilled hill chicken – Marinated with forest herbs, smoky and tender
Charcoal-grilled stream fish – Wrapped in banana leaves, served with salt and herbs
Sticky rice in bamboo tubes – Fragrant, soft, and pairs well with sesame salt
Can wine – Shared from bamboo straws, often served during cultural shows
>> Good to know: From September to early October, the New Rice Crop Festivals occur. After harvesting, the Tay people celebrate the “New Rice” Festival. They offer their harvest to worship heaven and earth, pray for good weather, prosperity, a good harvest, a healthy family, and honor their ancestors.

Best times to go there
The best time to visit Mai Hich depends on what you want to experience, as there are three distinct seasons:
November to February: The weather is cool, with misty mornings especially in January and February. While visibility may be reduced, this is also when flowers bloom and local festivals take place.
March to June: Days are bright and sunny, but the heat starts to pick up in May and June. It’s perfect for sightseeing and longer hikes, but make sure to bring a hat and sunscreen.
July to October: This is the rainy season, with cooler temperatures. However, the roads can get slippery, so it’s a good idea to pack waterproof gear.
If you love rice terraces, there are two seasons to consider:
Planting season: In March, April, and July/August, the fields turn green as they’re prepared for cultivation. It’s a great time to see the rice terraces in their early growth.
Harvest season: From late May to early June, the terraces turn golden, you'll have a chance to see stunning views. The second harvest happens in October, just before the land rests from November to January.
Wake up early to enjoy the fresh mountain air and a hearty breakfast.
Check out and transfer to nearby Lac and Pom Coong villages in Mai Chau.
Explore the local culture: rent a bicycle to ride through the valley or try on traditional Thai clothing for some memorable photos.
Lunch at a local restaurant.
Relax, then return to Hanoi in the afternoon.
How many days should you spend exploring Mai Hich?
Spending 1–2 nights in Mai Hich is ideal. One night offers a peaceful countryside escape, while two nights allow for a better immersion - more time to relax, connect with locals, and soak in the unhurried rural rhythm.
If you have 3 to 4 days, it's a great idea to continue your journey to Mai Chau, then Pu Luong Nature Reserve, which lies conveniently along the same route. While Mai Hich and Mai Chau are known for their flat rice fields and tranquil village life, Pu Luong adds a different layer of natural beauty with its terraced landscapes, waterfalls, forest trails, and mountain views.
