4. How to Get to Tam Coc?

Tam Coc is located approximately a 2-hour drive south of Hanoi, covering a distance of about 100 km. It is also approximately a 3-hour drive southwest from maritime Halong Bay.

• Hanoi, the capital of the country: 2 hours by road, 3 hours by evening train

You can purchase a train ticket to Ninh Binh at Hanoi Railway Station. The journey from Hanoi to Ninh Binh Railway Station takes a bit over 2 hours. From there, Tam Coc is located approximately 5 km away, and you can reach it by taking a taxi or a motorbike taxi from Ninh Binh Town.

• Halong Bay: 3 hours by car

You can take a bus or minivan via the QL10 highway, which connects Quang Ninh, Hai Phong, Thai Binh, Nam Dinh, and Ninh Binh. Pickup is from your hotel or a designated location in Halong Bay. The journey includes a short break in Hai Phong and offers scenic views of rice fields and villages. You will be dropped off in Tam Coc, where you can book a boat tour.

How to get around Tam Coc and Trang An?

Without a doubt, renting a motorbike is the way to go. Transportation is really cheap in Vietnam. The rent of a motorbike would cost you between 100,000 and 150,000 dong (which is the currency of Vietnam) per day.

If you're not quite comfortable on a motorbike, you could try bicycles, or Grab or Xanh SM. These are, in effect, the "Ubers" of Southeast Asia, where you can either get car rides or jump on the back of a motorcycle with a local driver who knows their way around.

Whatever transportation you choose, we highly recommend spending an early morning biking around Tam Coc. It was a thrilling trip while exploring the tiny paths that lead to marvelous sights.

4. Things to do in Tam Coc

4.1 Taking a boat ride on the river

To truly understand why they call Tam Coc the "Ha Long Bay on land", you have to get on the water. The real exploration happens on a small sampan, gliding down the Ngo Dong River without the noise of an engine. It’s an immersive journey that feels a world away from anywhere else.

• Hang Hai (Second Cave): About a kilometer later, you reach Hang Hai. While not as long, the experience of gliding through it is just as memorable.
• Hang Ba (Third Cave): The last one, Hang Ba, is different; its ceiling gets really low here, and I remember having to duck my head to pass through, which adds a bit of adventure to the end of the journey.

One final piece of advice from my own experience: Tam Coc gets incredibly busy, especially during the peak season, and the wait for tickets can be long. I’d strongly recommend booking your boat trip in advance through a reliable operator if you can. It saves you a lot of time and lets you get to the peaceful part of the experience that much faster.

Also, one more thing to share, although it may seem a bit personal, I think it is necessary. Tipping in Vietnam is mostly optional, but if you take a boat trip in Tam Coc or Trang An, the boatmen are mostly older men and women. So, if you have a good trip, don’t hesitate to tip them a little. It will definitely make their day.

4.2 Bich Dong Pagoda

After finishing the long boat ride, your legs will definitely be a bit numb, so take a walk or cycle to the second destination in Tam Coc, Bich Dong Pagoda, only about 15 minutes walk from Tam Coc wharf.

Bich Dong Pagoda is an ancient, three-tiered cave pagoda built directly into the side of Ngu Nhac Mountain. Its name beautifully translates to "Green Grotto" or "Pearl Grotto," a nod to the lush, natural scenery that surrounds it.

The pagoda's history dates back to 1428, during the Early Le Dynasty, when the site was chosen by two monks named Tri Kien and Tri The. It later gained prominence and was given the honorary title ‘Nam Thien De Nhi Dong’ ('The Second Most Beautiful Cave in the South'), a rank surpassed only by Huong Tich Cave. The complex also received recognition from King Le Canh Hung of the Later Le Dynasty, who composed a poem in its honor.
