Ba Quang Burning Grass Hill: Poetry in the Great Forest of Cao Bang

Hidden deep in the forests of Cao Bang lies Ba Quang Burning Grass Hill, a place where the landscape changes colors with the seasons and the air feels crisp and pure. I first came here on a trek, chasing stories of a hill that glows like fire in winter light. What I found was more than just a viewpoint: rolling grass fields stretching endlessly, locals who welcomed me with warmth, and a rare sense of peace far away from tourist crowds. For anyone who loves nature and quiet escapes, Ba Quang is where poetry and wilderness meet.

What and Where is Ba Quang Burning Grass Hill?

Ba Quang Burning Grass Hill, locally known as Vinh Quy Grass Hill, is a hidden spot in Vinh Quy Commune, Ha Lang District of Cao Bang Province, around 80 kilometers east of Cao Bang City. The hill lies between Khum Din and Bac Vong hamlets, with wide, rolling slopes blanketed in wild grass.

Set at a higher elevation, the climate here is cooler and fresher than in the lowlands. The landscape is simple yet eye-catching: open grassy hills that change colors with the seasons, offering a natural canvas for hikers and photographers. Still little known to international travelers, Ba Quang remains a quiet, off-the-beaten-path escape; ideal for those seeking easy treks, wide-open scenery, and unspoiled nature far from tourist crowds.

The Magic of the “Burning Grass”

From late spring to early autumn, Ba Quang’s slopes are covered in lush green grass, soft and vibrant under the northern sun. As the months pass, the color slowly shifts: by October the green fades into golden yellow, then deep orange, and finally into a reddish-brown during the coldest weeks of winter.

Scientifically, the change comes from the life cycle of the native grasses. From May to October, abundant rain keeps them fresh and green. As the dry season arrives and temperatures drop below 15°C, the moisture in the soil and plants decreases, turning the blades from green to yellow, then orange, and finally a deep russet brown in the heart of winter. Under sunrise or sunset light, the pigments reflect back a fiery hue, creating the illusion of flames dancing across the hillsides.

    Experiences Waiting on the Hill

When you explore Ba Quang Burning Grass Hill, you have two options: a day trip or staying overnight to enjoy the stars. Here are the activities and things you should do at Ba Quang hill.

    Short Hike to the Summit

To reach Ba Quang Burning Grass Hill, a short hike is unavoidable, but don’t worry; it’s surprisingly easy. The trail is only about 700 meters long and takes around 15–20 minutes, with a gentle slope that even older visitors can handle comfortably.

Think of it as a quick stair-climber workout in nature: fresh breezes, the scent of wild grass, and the sound of leaves rustling underfoot. In exchange for this small effort, you’re rewarded with a 360-degree panorama of rolling hills and endless grass fields.

Sometimes the simplest hikes bring the grandest views. And with so few travelers making it out here, this short Ba Quang hill hike feels like a secret reward reserved just for you.

    Photography Heaven

After a short 15–20 minute climb, Ba Quang reveals its scenic beauty, with wide views of rolling hills stretching to the horizon. The soft light filters through the grass, creating a peaceful atmosphere. If you bring a drone, the aerial perspective offers a striking view of the grasslands against the sky.

If you arrive early, around 5 a.m., the first light gives the grass a warm, glowing hue. Later in the afternoon, from 2:30 to 5, the colors soften, creating a calm, almost serene ambiance. Looking around, many people thought, “this feels like a little slice of Mongolia”, and someone was reminded of the Windows XP wallpaper. It’s a place that captures the essence of nature, whether you're using a professional camera or simply snapping pictures with your phone.

    Picnicking and Relaxing

After snapping all the photos you want, it might be time to slow down and simply enjoy the hill. Spread out a mat, unpack some snacks, and let the cool breeze rustle through the grass while you eat. A picnic at Ba Quang is the perfect “low effort, high chill” activity: couples can share a quiet lunch, and families can let their children run freely across the open field.

If you did not bring food from Cao Bang City, there is no need to worry. Near the parking lot at the foot of the hill, you will usually find a small shop and a food stall where you can buy simple items to take with you. There is also a homestay named Ba Quang panorama on Ba Quang hill that provides meals and accommodation. Prices may be slightly higher as transporting supplies uphill is more difficult.

Finally, remember to bring extra trash bags, since there are no bins or staff to clean the hillside. Preserving the grass fields is part of the experience, so please leave nothing behind except your footprints.

    Camping and Stargazing

A night on Ba Quang hill is a rare adventure in Cao Bang. With almost no light pollution, the sky becomes a dome of stars, and on clear nights the Milky Way is visible. Pitching a tent on the grassy slope makes the chill worthwhile, but nights here can get surprisingly cold, often dropping to 10–15°C, so pack warm clothes and a proper sleeping bag. A small fire may also be possible if local rules allow.

If you prefer something simple, there is also Ba Quang Panorama, a modest spot run by local families on the hill. They offer basic tents and rooms, along with home-cooked meals, which makes it an easy option if you don’t want to carry camping gear. Ba Quang overnight remains an off-the-beaten-path highlight few travelers ever experience.

    Cloud Hunting at Dawn

Waking up on Ba Quang hill at first light can feel like stepping into another world. Between 5:00 and 6:00 a.m., after a cold night or rain, layers of mist gather in the valley and rise slowly, forming what locals call the “sea of clouds”. This fleeting spectacle, often lasting only a few minutes, is what makes Ba Quang cloud hunting so special.

The drifting dawn mist in Cao Bang sometimes veils the hills, sometimes parts to reveal golden light spilling over the slopes. To catch it at the perfect moment, travelers are advised to stay overnight so they can climb to the summit in time for sunrise Ba Quang hill. It is the most “Instagrammable” scene here, different from the calm grassland you see by day.

    Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Ba Quang hill in Cao Bang is October to January, during the dry season, when Cao Bang travel weather is cool (15–25°C) and roads are accessible. This period showcases the Ba Quang burning grass hill in its golden-orange glory, perfect for Vietnam winter landscapes. Visit at sunrise (around 6 AM) or sunset (5–6 PM) for stunning photos, as soft light enhances the hill’s poetic charm. The dry season ensures stable trails, ideal for hikes and photography without muddy challenges.

    Dry season

From May to September, the rainy season transforms Ba Quang grass hill into a lush green paradise, best for vibrant summer shots. However, heavy rainfallcan make dirt roads slippery, requiring sturdy shoes and 4WD vehicles. This season suits adventurers but may frustrate casual travelers.

    Rainy season

For the best experience, plan Cao Bang October travel to catch the hill’s iconic burnt-orange hues. Pack layers for chilly evenings, check local burn schedules, and arrive early for sunrise views.

How to get to Ba Quang Burning Grass

Here's how to get to Ba Quang grass hill:

From Hanoi (280 km to Cao Bang City)

    • Catch a sleeper bus from My Dinh station (6–7 hours, ~300,000–400,000 VND) or drive/private car via QL3 highway (5–6 hours).
    • Limousines offer AC comfort (~500,000 VND), but be sure to book ahead via apps like Vexere.

From Cao Bang City (70–80 km southeast)

    Rent a sturdy motorbike (~200,000 VND/day) or hire a jeep/taxi (~1,000,000 VND round-trip).

    • Head to Thanh Nhật, then turn right toward Khum Din village. Watch for unmarked dirt roads; it takes about 1.5–2 hours.
    • From Khum Din, trek 700m uphill (15–20 minutes, steep but doable). Wear grippy shoes and bring water. There are no facilities en route.

In my opinion, self-driving demands mountain experience. So, avoid solo if new to off-road; because locals swear by group rides for safety. Otherwise, you can join a guided tour from Cao Bang (includes jeep, local guide, meals; ~800,000–1,500,000 VND/person).

Toller Artikel!
