Is Koh Lipe Right for You? A Local’s Guide to Nature, Culture, and Relaxation

As a local, I've sometimes overlooked the southern island of Koh Lipe in favor of popular spots like Phuket or Koh Samui. However, don't underestimate Koh Lipe. Having witnessed Koh Lipe’s transformation over the years, I find its enduring charm lies in the perfect balance it maintains between accessibility and unspoiled nature.
I'll explain why it's the perfect fit, offering a beautiful harmony of nature, culture, and relaxation.

    1. Location

Tucked away in the south of Thailand, close to the Malaysian border, lies an island paradise called Koh Lipe.

    Koh Lipe Thailand

Situated in the Andaman Sea and part of the Tarutao National Marine Park, Koh Lipe is surrounded by beautiful, coral-rich waters, making it truly heaven on earth.

    • Nature:

Koh Lipe's breathtaking beaches are its main draw. The best option is Pattaya Beach, while the more sedate eastern beaches provide colorful coral reefs for diving and snorkeling. Sunrise and Sunset Beaches offer serene morning and sunset tranquility, while Chao Le Beach is ideal for rest.

A personal recommendation is to explore the island's secret beach. To find this well-kept secret, simply walk along the wooden bridge at the end of Pattaya Beach!

    • Culture:

Koh Lipe is a cultural treasure trove, home to the aboriginal Malay group, the U Rak Woi, and the indigenous Chao Ley, also known as the Sea Gypsies. These communities are the heartbeat of the island, celebrated through colorful festivals and daily rituals that honor their deep connection to the sea. Strolling along the shoreline, you'll witness their incredible traditional boat-building skills, a craft handed down through generations.

Engaging with the Chao Ley community offers a deeper understanding of their unique way of life and cultural heritage.

    A snorkeler's dream came true

The question is: Where to snorkel?

    • Koh Usen: Swim from Sunrise Beach in 10 minutes, but beware of strong currents. Rent a kayak from Castaway or Mali Resort for 150 THB/hour and park among the rocks on the east side.
    • Koh Kra: Located off Sunrise Beach, north towards Koh Adang. Kayak from Koh Usen or take a shorter trip from Salisa Resort.
    • Sunset Beach: Swim 50 meters from Bayview Sunset Bungalows to find a coral reef among the rocks. Walk halfway along the rocks and jump in near the coral.
    • Pattaya Beach: Not recommended due to many sea urchins.

    4.4 Walking Street

Bars are open late on Walking Street, which is a busy and energetic area. From 6 PM till around midnight, it comes to life. Walking Street is lively and bustling, with some bars remaining open until the wee hours of the morning.

The street is more well-known for its many dining options than its beach views. You may find American-style burgers at Elephant Cafe and Bar and Spanish tapas at The Box, which is run by a Spanish chef. It's the center of Koh Lipe's nightlife, with stores closing at around 10 PM and restaurants staying open until at least midnight.

    4.5 Wat Hantalay

Located between Pattaya Beach and Sunset Beach, Wat Hantalay is a serene retreat surrounded by beautiful vegetation. Despite being modest, the temple is quite valuable culturally since it has two shrine halls with statues of Buddha and Brahma in each. Besides being allowed to meditate here, visitors are urged to dress decently and think about giving. For travelers traveling between the beaches, this serene and historically significant temple is a must-see.

4.6 Dive with Dolphins and Whales

Marine life around Koh Lipe is surreal, and diving takes you even deeper into this underwater world. You might also see dolphins, whale sharks, sperm whales, eagle rays, and mantas.

Pro Tip: Forra Diving is highly recommended. A fun dive costs around 1,500 baht ($44), and the Open Water course is 14,500 baht ($429).

    4.7 Kayaking on Koh Lipe

Every beach on Koh Lipe offers kayak rentals, however Pattaya Beach is a popular option.  Near a dive school at the further end of the beach is a wooden cabin where you can rent a two-person kayak and life jackets for 200 baht (£4.36 or $5.40).  All around the island, the rental cost is the same. A shorter path is frequently more pleasurable, even though it is feasible to circle the island in a few hours.

    8. Koh Lipe: A Tranquil Alternative to Langkawi and Phuket

From November through April, visitors can enjoy a variety of water sports and a relaxed ambiance on Koh Lipe. While the nightlife is more subdued compared to the vibrant scenes in Langkawi and Phuket, there is still plenty of entertainment to be found, with beachfront bars and local festivals adding to the charm.

    Langkawi
Langkawi is a serene archipelago of 140 islands – only a few of which are inhabited.

Koh Lipe offers a serene contrast to Thailand's busier islands, combining tranquility with local charm. Unlike Phuket, which is known for its bustling streets and crowded beaches, Koh Lipe provides a more intimate and peaceful experience. The island's smaller size and limited development help preserve its natural beauty, making it a perfect escape from the crowds.

    Koh Lipe
Koh Lipe provides a more intimate and peaceful experience

Compared to Langkawi, which is larger and more commercialized, Koh Lipe's remote location makes it feel more exclusive and untouched. While Langkawi offers duty-free shopping and numerous tourist attractions, Koh Lipe captivates visitors with its pure sandy stretches, ideal for snorkeling and diving.

    Last words

Though more secluded and somewhat pricier due to its location, Koh Lipe offers a cleaner and more tranquil alternative. Its unspoiled environment and slower pace provide a refreshing retreat from typical tourist hotspots. Ideal for both relaxation and adventure, Koh Lipe's clear waters, white sand beaches, and peaceful atmosphere create unforgettable memories. For those seeking Thailand’s stunning beaches and authentic cultural experiences, Koh Lipe remains an attractive destination.
